In my life, it began with an awakening in my mind as to the depth of being so immobilized by the pain of sexual and physical abuse that the only thing I could do was watch TV and eat, all day long. I could not even allow myself to think about the emotional pain; instead, I stuffed it down with constant eating and ignored it by focusing on fictionalized stories on TV. I began to change with only one step; as I began to adjust my life with just that one step, I would see another step and go for that one. It was a process that took years, but I am no longer a slave to the pain of my youth. Be sure to give yourself time; each choice of a more healthy life takes diligence and love, of yourself and others. I have added just a bit to these tips, details which I have experienced as very beneficial, as I endeavored to develop my own resilience.

9. Develop a sense of gratitude for individuals in your life who bless you, for the positive steps you make, and the strength you develop. Letting go of the tendency to blame and embracing all you can be grateful for will ease a lot of pain that can get bottled up. Even exploring things of faith in God will support resiliency.
There have been times in my life when the only thing I could perceive were imposing, cold, dark trees. As I stepped into the process of developing resilience, I began to see that even though there were some aspects of the trees that remained dark (like memories that would stay with me all of my life), I began to notice that there is beauty in my life. There is healthy, green growth in my own life and all around me, there is overwhelming beauty; all I have to do is notice it and be thankful. My life is far more than what it once was; I am able to not only be OK with myself, but also encourage others to explore the beauty of life. The most important step of developing resilience in my life has been the realization that I needed God in my life every day, all day long. Therefore, I committed my life to Jesus Christ, receiving His gift of forgiveness for my sins (of which there have been many - some I even have to endeavor hard to forgive myself), and receive eternal life and relationship with the One who created me.
